Soft-Sided vs Hard-Shell Carriers: Which Is Right for You?

Soft-sided and hard-shell carriers each suit different situations, and there is rarely a single right answer, only a better fit for how you actually travel.

Soft-sided carriers are lighter, fold flat for storage and tend to feel less clinical to a nervous pet, since the fabric gives slightly and the shape is less rigid. They are usually the better choice for short, everyday trips such as the vet or a quick visit to family.

Hard-shell carriers offer more protection on longer car journeys or when checked as hold luggage, since the rigid shell resists knocks that a soft carrier simply could not. They are also easier to disinfect thoroughly, which matters if you are bringing a new pet home or dealing with an unwell one.

If you are only ever making short trips nearby, a soft carrier will usually serve you well. If you travel further afield more often, it may be worth having a hard-shell option too.
