Helping a Nervous Cat Get Used to a Carrier

Cats tend to link the carrier with one thing: the vet. That association alone can make getting them inside a battle every single time. The good news is that a little groundwork between trips can change how your cat feels about it.

Leave the carrier out in a quiet corner of the house for a week or two before you need to use it, ideally with a soft blanket inside and maybe a few treats scattered near the entrance. Let your cat investigate in their own time rather than pushing them towards it.

When it is time to travel, a carrier with a top-loading opening tends to cause far less stress than one with only a front door, since you can lower your cat in gently rather than having to push them through a narrow gap.

Covering part of the carrier with a light cloth during the journey can also help, as it reduces visual stimulation and gives your cat a smaller, calmer space to settle into.
