Small Dog Carriers
Carriers
Small dog carriers are built around dogs up to roughly 10kg, which covers everything from toy breeds to smaller adult dogs of breeds that only reach a modest size. It's also our largest single dog carrier category, which means there's a genuine spread of formats here rather than one design repeated in different colours: soft-sided bags, sling-style carriers, and structured carriers with a supportive base all show up at this size, since a lighter dog opens up more practical options than a heavier one does.

More About Small Dog Carriers
Choosing Between Formats at This Size
At under 10kg, weight stops being the limiting factor it is for bigger dogs, so the decision usually comes down to how your dog prefers to travel rather than what a carrier can physically support. A dog who likes being held close against you on shorter outings is often happiest in our dog sling range, which distributes weight across one shoulder for a more contained, reassuring feel. A dog who's a bit bigger, or a household with a dog just outside this range as they grow, should also check our medium dog carriers range for a bit more internal room.
Getting the Fit Right
Even within a 10kg ceiling, there's a real difference between a 3kg toy breed and an 9kg small dog, and using the actual internal dimensions rather than the category name alone will save you a return. Check that your dog can stand, turn around and lie down without their head or tail pressing against the sides, and don't assume a carrier described as "small dog" will automatically suit every dog under 10kg equally well.
Other Short Trips
If your main reason for buying is an upcoming vet appointment, our pet carriers for vet visits range picks out the designs with the easiest top access for that specific kind of trip.
Why Choose a Small Dog Carrier
Small dogs are light enough that format becomes a genuine choice rather than a constraint, which is exactly why this category has the widest range of styles on the site. That's useful, but it also means it's worth being deliberate about what you're actually optimising for: a carrier that folds flat for occasional use, one built for a daily walk to the shops, or one that needs to survive being wedged into a car boot regularly are three different briefs even though the dog inside might be exactly the same size in each case.
Small dogs can also be more sensitive to a carrier that doesn't fit properly than larger dogs are, since there's less margin for error in the internal space. A carrier that's a couple of centimetres too tight is a bigger proportional squeeze for a 4kg dog than the same shortfall would be for a 20kg one.
Sizing and Buying Guide
Weigh your dog first, since 10kg is the practical ceiling for this category and a dog close to that limit is a genuinely different fit challenge to one at 3kg. Then measure length nose to tail base, height floor to the top of the head or ears, and width across the shoulders, and check all three against the product's stated internal dimensions rather than just the weight limit alone, since a lightweight dog with a long body or tall ears can still be poorly served by a carrier that's technically rated for their weight. Toy and very small breeds generally do better in a snugger, more enclosed carrier, while dogs at the upper end of this range benefit from checking they have genuine room to turn around.
